I first heard of John Brown the night his heroics earned him the Medal of Valor in 1994. We

started working drug investigations together in 1995. We worked patrol, burglary, robbery and

homicide side by side until I retired in 2018. I had the privilege of writing his evaluations for 22

years, but he was more than a cop, he was a teammate, but most of all he was family.

Joni and I enjoyed attending softball and basketball games with John and Kathy as they cheered

for their children. We travelled to faraway places, but the best times spent with John was when

he was relaxed and talking about his family and future. He wanted to retire to Colorado. A

move I always questioned because it is cold there.

John impacted our lives as a professional and as a friend. His out of sequence death has left a

void that is remembered fondly. I am honored that Kathy and John’s family allow me to

continue to work with John as a friend of the John Brown Foundation.
